Sheryar Hyatt

I’m Sheryar Hyatt (aka Shades). Petals is my creative project. Everything I make is Petals.

The first instrument I’ve released is Folium, an 8 voice FM synthesizer that puts scales and tunings centre stage.

Before Petals I made music under a handful of aliases and performed under the alias Dalt Wisney.

I also happen to be a double immigrant. Pakistan > Turkey > Canada. In 2017 I was in Vancouver planning an audiovisual live show when I got severely ill.

Years of chronic illness, fatigue, pain, and severe environmental/food sensitivities then narrowed my life down to what could be done from a desk. Or on really bad days, from my bed. Music, art, and sound design stayed constant through all of it.

Luckily, remote work was becoming a thing, which meant I could have Ableton open while working. I have worked at various remote jobs over the years while battling illness.

Illness took me deeper into sound. Max/MSP and ~gen first, then C++ and DSP, and eventually I began building the instruments and devices I wanted to use. I also learned JavaScript and React along the way via freeCodeCamp. And levelled up a highschool era obsession with grids, UI design, Winamp Skins, and Macromedia Fireworks to modern UI design skills in Figma.

From 2023 to early 2026 I worked with Madrona Labs as a remote contractor doing sound design, composition, social media management, and creating learning materials for their instruments.

Some of that work can be heard in Flower Studies, a commissioned EP.

I eventually ported my ~gen experiments into madronalib, Madrona’s open source DSP library, and Petals took shape in early 2026.

I am also in the process of working on new music as Petals, mostly made with my own instruments and processes, which I am excited to share.

Memory Magnifier holds leftover work from the years in between - leftovers from anonymous vaporwave and ambient tape releases, and unused commercial commissions.
